“Colloquial Proverbs and Expressions”

Under the supervision of Prof MANAR ABDEL MOEZ Director of the Cairo University Centre for Foreign Languages and Professional Translation (CLT)

On the occasion of International Translation Day – 30 September, the Cairo University Centre for Foreign Languages and Professional Translation (CLT) announces its annual translation competition, held under the title: “Egyptian Folk Literature in the Languages of the World: Colloquial Proverbs and Expressions”

This year, the Centre celebrates the scholar Ahmed Taymour Pasha by selecting two of his works as the subjects of the competition:

·         Young Translator Category (Up to 22 years of age):

o    Al-Kinayat al-'Ammiyyah (Colloquial Metaphors and Idioms)

·         Professional Translator Category (Aged 23 and above):

o    Al-Amthal al-'Ammiyyah (Colloquial Proverbs)

Available Languages: English | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Russian | Chinese | Japanese | Korean

Objectives of the Competition:

·         Celebrating International Translation Day and fostering intercultural dialogue among peoples.

·         Introducing Egyptian culture and heritage to non-Arabic speaking readers.

·         Highlighting colloquial proverbs and expressions as a reflection of Egyptian wisdom, culture, and character.

·         Encouraging young translators to translate Egyptian intellectual and cultural works.

·         Revitalising the Centre’s translation project through the contributions of professional translators.

Jury Panel: A confidential committee comprising a select group of professors of various languages and their literatures.

Evaluation Criteria (100 Marks):

·         40 marks for linguistic accuracy.

·         20 marks for preserving the spirit of the text and its cultural aspects.

·         20 marks for using appropriate translation techniques.

·         20 marks for additional effort, such as introductions, conclusions, and footnotes.

Key Dates:

·         Competition Launch: 30 September 2026

·         Registration Deadline: 20 October 2026

·         Translation Submission Deadline: 31 January 2027

·         Announcement of Results and Ceremony: April 2027

Prizes:

·         Young Translator: EGP 10,000 for the first-place winner in each language.

·         Professional Translator: EGP 20,000 for the first-place winner in each language.

In the case of joint entries involving more than one translator, the prize will be divided equally among them.

First, second, and third-place winners in each language will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, alongside the opportunity to have the first-place winning translation published in a book issued by the Centre.

The prize will be withheld in the absence of a high-quality translation, if parts of the original text are omitted, or in the event of total or excessive reliance on machine translation that deprives the work of its human creative element.

Participate in the “Egyptian Folk Literature in the Languages of the World” competition, and contribute to presenting a facet of Egyptian heritage and culture to readers worldwide across diverse languages.
